Which motorcycles does an A2 licence cover?

Category A2 has no fixed engine capacity limit. The motorcycle must not exceed 35 kW or a power-to-weight ratio of 0.2 kW/kg. It must also not be derived from a motorcycle with more than twice its power.

An A2 driving licence also covers A1 and M vehicles. Eligibility is assessed using the power and technical values on the registration document, not engine capacity alone.

A2 licence application requirements

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Meet the statutory education and medical requirements
  • Prepare an identity document, biometric photograph and the necessary registration documents
  • Complete the theory training and test obligations applicable to your existing licence status
  • Attend practical training and the practical test

How does A2 motorcycle training progress?

The initial assessment considers your experience, physical fit and target motorcycle. Training progresses from control operation, low-speed balance, turning, braking, obstacle avoidance and course exercises to reading traffic and safe road positioning.

For applicants aiming to ride manual motorcycles, clutch-throttle coordination and gear changes are practised separately. Taking the test on an automatic vehicle may result in an automatic transmission restriction.

Planning a category A upgrade

Applicants aged 20–23 need at least two years of A2 experience to apply for category A. If you plan to ride high-powered motorcycles in the long term, it is important to establish correct technique, protective equipment use and safe riding habits during A2 training.
