Technical scope of category A2
Category A2 has no fixed engine capacity limit. A two-wheeled motorcycle must not exceed 35 kW or a power-to-weight ratio of 0.2 kW/kg. Eligibility is determined by the technical values on the registration document, not the model name.
An A2 licence also covers A1 and M vehicles. Taking the test on an automatic vehicle may result in an automatic transmission restriction on your licence.
Who can join the A2 automatic programme?
- Applicants aged 18 and over
- Those who meet the medical requirements for riding a motorcycle
- Beginner riders with no previous motorcycle experience
- Those aiming to ride a scooter or a mid-range automatic motorcycle
Lesson plan
Training develops correct observation, balanced throttle use, controlled braking and awareness of your surroundings, rather than memorisation of the test course. As controlled-area practice progresses, it is combined with safe decision-making exercises in traffic.
- Vehicle and protective equipment checks
- Low-speed balance and turning practice
- Acceleration, deceleration, obstacle avoidance and emergency braking
- Junctions, lanes, following distance and safe stopping
Planning to progress to category A
Riders aged 20–23 applying for category A need at least two years of A2 experience. If your long-term goal is to ride high-powered motorcycles, consider your training vehicle and transmission choice as part of that plan.
