Who can apply for a category A licence?
Applicants aged 20 and over who have held an A2 licence for at least two years can apply for category A. Applicants aged 24 and over do not need two years of A2 experience.
There is an additional minimum age of 21 for three-wheeled motorcycles exceeding 15 kW. Age, experience, medical fitness and existing driving licence details should be checked together before applying.
Which motorcycles does category A cover?
For two-wheeled motorcycles with or without a sidecar, category A is not subject to the upper power limits of A1 and A2. The licence also covers A2, A1 and M vehicles.
Higher power may mean faster acceleration, greater weight and more sensitive throttle and brake control. Legal entitlement and safe riding proficiency are not the same thing.
Category A practical training
The training plan is based on the applicant's A2 experience and the motorcycles they have ridden. Low-speed control, precise clutch-throttle use, turning, observation, controlled braking, obstacle avoidance and safe decisions in traffic are developed together.
For applicants entering directly at age 24 without an experience requirement, training can be planned progressively using A2 and A vehicles. The current lesson and test schedule is confirmed at registration.
